Placing one hand on the abdomen above the symphysis pubis is the proper hand position for uterine massage to support and hold the lower part of the uterus to prevent inversion. Asking the client to ambulate to the bathroom to empty her bladder and positioning the client in a slight Trendelenburg position are not appropriate actions for fundal massage. Massage should not be limited to when cramping begins; the fundus should be massaged to firm it.
