ANS: C
A woman who performs regular breast self-examination (BSE) becomes knowledgeable about her breasts, so she is often able to detect an abnormality earlier or recognize normal findings. Mammography and BSE are both needed for early detection of breast cancer. Only about 10 of breast lumps found by women are malignant, with 1 in 8 women developing breast cancer. Risk factors identify less than 50 of women who will develop breast cancer.
