Menopause can only be diagnosed with certainty after 1 year without menstrual periods. Although fluctuations in a woman's cycle are normal during the perimenopausal years, this answer is not correct, as it appears to signify that there is no relationship between the lack of periods and menopause, and so is misleading. The average age of menopause in the United States is 51.4 years, with a range of 35-60 years.
