Estuaries are very productive because they act as nutrient sinks. The abundance of nutrients supports the growth of phytoplankton, algae, and emergent plants, all of which support secondary production in estuaries and elsewhere. Nutrients are trapped in estuaries as a result of nutrient input from the sea and from rivers; adsorption of nutrients onto sinking particles; and the ejection of pseudofeces by benthic filter feeders at the bottom of estuaries.
