All organisms produce or have the potential of producing more offspring than can survive to reproduce. This is because resources are limited in the environment, which means that offspring will compete with one another for these limited resources. Since individuals in a population are varied with respect to their traits, the outcome of the competition is dependent on the possession of certain traits that give an individual an edge over other competing individuals. If these traits are heritable, then the successful competitors will pass on these traits to their offspring with the result that more offspring will have the traits of the successful individual over the traits of the unsuccessful individuals.
