A review is a brief, immediate response to a theatrical event that appears in newspapers or magazine or on a television or radio segment, while criticism is usually published in scholarly journals or books, often well after the event. Criticism may provide a deeper analysis and take a more sophisticated or intellectual approach than a review. Often critics are afforded more space to express themselves. Reviewers serve as guides to the theatre marketplace, writing for the general public, while critics often write for readers with a deeper knowledge of the field.
