Why is it thought that intrauterine devices (IUD) are not as widely used in the U.S. as compared with other parts of the world?

  a. They are mandated for prostitutes and women of low socioeconomic status in many regions of the world, thus increasing their usage outside of the U.S.
  b. American women consider them very uncomfortable.
  c. They are not as effective as other forms of contraception available in the U.S.
  d. They are perceived as unsafe.
