The cuticle - is the outer layer formed by overlapping scales which provides strength and waterproofs the hair
The cortex - the major portion of the hair formed from long strands of keratin.  The cortex forms the main body of the hair and contains pigments that impart the hair color
The medulla - a central canal which acts to transport liquids and nutrients to the cells in the growing region of the hair found below the skin layer.  The medulla is usually an air-filled channel in the hair shaft found above the skin layer, as they are no longer needed for the transport of nutrients.
