Pulse field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) is a molecular method that provides "fingerprints" of serotypes that can easily be distinguished from one another. It is a useful technique in epidemiology to help identify the source of a particular outbreak. For example, Salmonella spp. can be found throughout many areas, but matching a particular Salmonella serotype from a diseased patient and from the farm from which the infected meat originated strongly links them.
