A machine has four components, A, B, C, and D, set up in such a manner that all four parts must work for the machine to work properly. Assume the probability of one part working does not depend on the functionality of any of the other parts.

Also assume that the probabilities of the individual parts working are P(A ) = P(B) = 0.97, P(C) = 0.9, and P(D) = 0.94. Find the probability that the machine works properly.
  A) 0.796 B) 0.204 C) 0.8206 D) 0.8468

Q. 2

Box plots are used to detect outliers in qualitative data sets, while z-scores are used to detect outliers in quantitative data sets.

  A) True B) False

Q. 3

A human gene carries a certain disease from a mother to her child with a probability rate of 0.40. That is, there is a 40 chance that the child becomes infected with the disease. Suppose a female carrier of the gene has three children.

Assume that the infections, or lack thereof, are independent of one another. Find the probability that all three of the children get the disease from their mother.
  A) 0.216 B) 0.144 C) 0.936 D) 0.064

Q. 4

A radio station claims that the amount of advertising each hour has an a mean of 16 minutes and a standard deviation of 1.3 minutes. You listen to the radio station for 1 hour and observe that the amount of advertising time is 13.66 minutes.

Based on your observation, what would you infer about the radio station's claim?

Q. 5

For two events, A and B, P(A ) = .4, P(B) = .7, and P(A  B) = .2. Find P(A  B).

  A) .5 B) .08 C) .14 D) .29

Q. 6

The speeds of the fastballs thrown by major league baseball pitchers were measured by radar gun. The mean speed was 87 miles per hour. The standard deviation of the speeds was 5 mph. Which of the following speeds would be classified as an outlier?

  A) 82 mph B) 77 mph C) 95 mph D) 103 mph

Q. 7

Suppose that 80 of the employees of a company received cash or company stock as a bonus at the end of the year.

If 60 of the employees received a cash bonus and 30 received stock, what is the probability that a randomly chosen employee received both cash and stock as a bonus?

Answer to #1

A

Answer to #2

B

Answer to #3

D

Answer to #4

The z-score for the value 13.66 is -1.8
Since the z-score would not indicate that 13.66 minutes represents an outlier, there is no evidence that the station's claim is incorrect.

Answer to #5

D

Answer to #6

D

Answer to #7

The Additive Rule states that P(A  B) = P(A ) + P(B) - P(A  B), so P(A  B) = P(A ) + P(B) - P(A  B) = .60 + .30 - .80 =.10.
