The number of vehicles passing through a bank drive-up line during each 15-minute period was
recorded. The results are shown below. Find the median number of vehicles going through the line
  in a fifteen-minute period.

  25 27 25 28
  28 25 30 27
  35 31 31 29
  24 31 25 20
  15 27 27 27
  A) 26.85 vehicles B) 28 vehicles C) 27 vehicles D) 31 vehicles

Q. 2

Dave is a college student contemplating a possible career option. One factor that will
influence his decision is the amount of money he is likely to make. He decides to look up
the average salary of graduates in that profession.

  Which information would be more
useful to him, the mean salary or the median salary. Why?

Q. 3

Listed below are the amounts of time (in months) that the employees of a restaurant have been
working at the restaurant. Find the mean.
  1 5 6 8 11 14 17 46 61 90 99 126 143 167

  A) 31.5 months B) 61.1 months C) 56.7 months D) 52.9 months

Q. 4

The mean height of a basketball team is 6 feet with a standard deviation of 0.2 feet. The team's
center is 6.9 feet tall. Find the center's z score. Is his score unusual?

  A) 4.95, yes B) 4.5, yes C) 3.83, no D) 4, no

Q. 5

The probability that when 75 people are surveyed, at least five of them have the same
  birth date. (Ignore leap years).

What will be an ideal response?

Q. 6

Human body temperatures have a mean of 98.20 F and a standard deviation of 0.62. Sally's
temperature can be described by z = -1.5. What is her temperature? Round your answer to the
  nearest hundredth.

  A) 97.27F B) 99.13F C) 96.70F D) 95.79F

Q. 7

The median of a data set is always/sometimes/never (select one) one of the data points in a
set of data. Explain your answer with brief examples.

What will be an ideal response?

Q. 8

The table below provides a frequency distribution for the winner of the Davis Cup during
  the period 1977-1994.

  Winner of
  Davis Cup Frequency
  United States 6
  Germany 3
  Czechoslovakia 1
  Australia 3
  France 1
  Sweden 4

Answer to #1

C

Answer to #2

The median salary would be more useful. Explanations will vary. Possible answer: In the case of salaries, there are
likely to be a few extreme values - salaries that are much higher than the majority of salaries. Unlike the mean, the
median is resistant to extreme values - it will not be affected by a few unusually high salaries. The median gives a
better indication of the typical salary than the mean.

Answer to #3

C

Answer to #4

B

Answer to #5

Answers may vary. Begin by representing birthdays by integers from 1 to 365. Then use a calculator or computer
program to generate 75 random integers. Count as a success if at least five of them are the same. (The numbers can be
sorted so that this is relatively easy to determine.) Repeat for 100 trials. The estimated probability is the number of
successes divided by 100. Estimated probability is about 0.00.

Answer to #6

A

Answer to #7

The general answer is that the median is sometimes in a data set. For example, the median of the data set 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 is
3.

Answer to #8

The mode. Since the data are not numerical, it is not possible to find the median or mean. The mode is the only
measure of center that can be used with data at the nominal level of measurement.
