What color represents the warmest water? What is the temperature of the
warmest water? What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

If surface winds are blowing eastward at  km/hr and winds in the upper
troposphere are blowing westward at  km/hr, will there be enough
vertical wind shear to prevent a tropical cyclone from forming? What will be an ideal response?

Question 3

If the Coriolis eff ect is strongest near the poles, why dont tropical cyclones
form in these areas? What will be an ideal response?

Question 4

Why dont tropical cyclones form very near the equator? What will be an ideal response?

Question 5

In the Northern Hemisphere, does a tropical cyclone generally follow a
clockwise path or a counterclockwise path? What will be an ideal response?

Question 6

As surface winds blow toward the equator in the Southern Hemisphere,
which way are they defl ected by the Coriolis eff ect? What will be an ideal response?

Question 7

Why is there a temperature diff erence between the equator and the poles? What will be an ideal response?

Answer to #1

Dark red-brown represents the warmest water, at about 35 C (95 F). (Colors vary
slightly with monitor settings.)

Answer to #2

Yes. The total wind shear is 15 km/hr + 30 km/hr, or 45 km/hr. This is higher than the
threshold for preventing the formation of tropical cyclones.

Answer to #3

There is usually not suffi cient heat energy to sustain a tropical cyclone in these areas.

Answer to #4

The Coriolis eff ect is too weak to create the needed rotation.

Answer to #5

A clockwise path.

Answer to #6

Toward the west (left, or counterclockwise).

Answer to #7

The sun shines more directly on the area near the equator than it does on the areas near
the poles.
