Answer to #1

1 . Polycultures have greater tolerance to environment and pest stress and provide insurance against total crop failure. Should one of the crops die, other species can still produce yield. This is sometimes called yield stability.
2 . Polycultures of woody crops and pastures in silviculture systems provide for diversification of income by providing short-term and long-term income and products for different markets.
3 . Polycultures with plants of different nutrient needs and rooting characteristics have the potential for greater use of light, water, and nutrient resources and greater overall productivity per acre. Polycultures of nitrogen-fixing legumes with annual or perennial grasses are less dependent on nitrogen fertilizer inputs.

Answer to #3

1 . Machinery specialized for the crop can be used to maximize efficiency of crop planting and harvest.
2 . Chemicals such as herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides can be used to target specific weed, insect, and microbial pests of the monocrop.
3 . Fertilizer systems can be developed to meet the nutrient needs of the crop by applying the nutrients at specific developmental stages.
4 . Specialized varieties are developed to efficiently use light, moisture, and other environmental resources.
5 . With monocultures, maturity and dry down of all plants within a variety is synchronized. This allows for a single harvest with reduced loss of grain due to spoilage.
