The student should assert that one principal source of closed adoption is foster children. There were 423,773 children in the U. S. foster-care system in 2009, median age 9.6 years, 53 male and 47 female, most of whom were placed as a result of parent abuse or neglect. The average amount of time these children spend in foster care is 15.4 months. Most foster children are children of color. Only 49 of those in foster care are reunited with parents or principal caretakers. The easiest to place are ages five and under, but many leave the system at age 18 without a family. Many suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, and social phobia.
