Politicians and business and educational leaders have been alarmed by our nation's students' poor academic performance compared to the performance of students in other countries, and particularly in other first-world countries. In an effort to improve the performance of our nation's students, standards have been created and students and teachers are being held accountable for students meeting the standards.
