Bright light causes the pupils to become smaller (shrink). When you close your eyes, you eliminate brightness, causes your pupils to get larger (the muscles therefore relax). The phenomenon you're describing is a phosphene (in simpler terms, seeing stars). In other words, a phosphene is a phenomenon characterized by the experience of seeing light without light actually entering the eye. Phosphenes can be directly induced by mechanical, electrical, or magnetic stimulation of the retina or visual cortex as well as by random firing of cells in the visual system - which is caused by staring into bright light. So the reason why it's happening is because the retina may still be firing after you've closed your eyes, causing this to occur.
