Why should a neutral stimulus precede an unconditioned stimulus in order for classical conditioning to be successful?
a)  The neutral stimulus signals that the unconditioned stimulus is coming; eventually the neutral stimulus becomes the conditioned stimulus.
b)  The neutral stimulus "wipes the learning slate clean," so to speak, making the impact of the unconditioned stimulus stronger.
c)  In order for a neutral stimulus to become paired with a conditioned stimulus, it must first be paired with an unconditioned stimulus.
d)  The neutral stimulus elicits the unconditioned response, but the unconditioned stimulus needs to be present at first.
