All other factors being equal (geothermal gradient, pressure, composition, and heat from other sources such as friction), why is magma generally produced in association with subduction zones as opposed to areas away from subduction zones?

Addition of water and temperature increase. As the cool oceanic slab sinks, heat and pressure drive water and other volatiles out of the rocks and sediments and into the overlying mantle above it. The partial melt generates basaltic magma. As the hot magma has a lower density, it migrates upwards and heats the underlying crust. This temperature increase may lead to additional melting and generate a secondary, more silica-rich magma through partial melting.
