Talent and ambition alone do not predict who will push on to reach a goal and who will give up when the

A performance goal is framed in terms of performing well in front of others, being judged favorably, and avoiding criticism.
A mastery or learning goal is framed in terms of increasing one’s competence and skills.
Mastery goals are more motivating than performance goals because mastery goals result in intrinsic rewards.
Mastery goals lead to persistence in the face of failures and setbacks, whereas performance goals often lead to giving up after failure.
