At one time, being overweight was thought to be a sign of emotional disturbance.
The evidence, however, came mainly from self-reports and from flawed studies that lacked control groups or objective measures of how much people were actually eating.
When researchers did controlled experiments, they learned that fat people, on average, are no more and no less emotionally disturbed than average weight people.
