When an assumption or belief keeps us from considering the evidence fairly, or causes us to ignore the evidence completely, it becomes a bias.  Often a bias remains hidden until someone changes our belief and we get defensive.  Describe how the 1998 book by Judith Rich Harris (The Nurture Assumption) questioned prevailing assumptions.

•   In this book, Judith Rich Harris argued that genes and peers are more important influences on a child’s personality and behavior than how the parents raise the child.
•   This challenged the widespread bias that parents are the most important influence in shaping a child’s personality.
•   As a result, the book provoked a storm of disbelief and outrage.
•   Many criticized the book without even reading it.
•   Many also attacked the credentials of the author.
•   Strong biases often create intellectual blinders, as in this case.
