Stem cell research is one of the hottest research areas in neuroscience but it also is a hotly debated topic in the United States.  Explain the reasoning behind both sides of the debate.  What less controversial alternatives are neuroscientists currently pursuing?

Against—The most useful stem cells come from embryos.  Antiabortionists fear this may encourage more abortions.
For —Stem cell research holds the potential to cure many human diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.
Alternatives—Use of adult stem cells from bone marrow and skin.  So far, however, this has not been successful.
