Groupthink is an emphasis on group unanimity at the expense of critical thinking and sound decision making. Groups sometimes become so intent on ensuring that everyone agrees with everyone else that they lose their capacity to evaluate issues objectively.
Some of the more memorable example of groupthink were the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Challenger shuttle disaster.
As a psychological condition, groupthink is often treated within an organization. It is recommended that all groups appoint a “devil’s advocate,” a person whose role is to voice doubts about the wisdom of the group’s decisions. Another suggestion is having independent experts on hand to evaluate whether the group’s decisions make sense. Finally, it can be useful to hold a follow-up meeting to evaluate whether the decision reached in the first meeting still seems reasonable.
