Positive symptoms refer to a presence of abnormal behavior. Another way to say it is that the behavior is positive (they are present) for abnormality. Examples of this include incoherent speech and hallucinations. Negative symptoms refer to an absence of anticipated or expected behavior. Another way to say that is that the behavior is negative (they don’t exist) for normal behaviors. Examples include social withdrawal and apathy.
