The traditional method for removing kidney stones is surgery, wherein the urinary system component containing the stone or stones is opened, and the stones removed. A more recent and noninvasive method of removing kidney stones is by the use of a lithotripter device, which uses sound waves to break up the stones into pieces small enough to be passed through the ureters and bladder to the urethra and out of the body.
