According to the Department of Labor, the Consumer Price Index is a measure of the representative cost of a “basket” of goods and services. It stood at 127.4 in 1990, and had reached 201 by mid-2006.  Therefore, by what percent had the CPI increased over that sixteen--year interval?

(201-127.4)/127.4 = 0.578 = 57.8 %
