According to the Organic Consumers Association, “organic food is healthier and safer for consumers than nonorganic products.” Demand for organically grown food is increasing in the United States and the European Union at 15 to 20 percent per year. Although organic food usually costs more than conventional food in supermarkets, economics of scale are helping to lower the price differentials. Consumers as of 2005 in the United States spent $14 billion on organic food. Research the issue at www.organicconsumers.org. Is organic food “better” than conventionally produced food? How did you define “better” to answer this question?

Studies paid for or supported by conventional growers as well as by the Food and Drug Administration conclude that conventional food is no less healthy than organically grown food. Organic growers disagree. Organic growers argue that the impact of organic agriculture is less stressful on farmland than conventional agriculture and that the presence of low levels of toxics in some conventional food are harmful to human health.
