It is critical to acknowledge the parallels between theory building and evidence-based practices. Theory building is a process where theories are developed, hypotheses are generated, data are collected, and hypotheses are tested. These analyses result in changes and revisions to existing theories. Evidence-based practices highlight the importance of empirical research in making sound crime-control decisions. These areas are linked in that a specific criminological theory offers a cause-and-effect explanation for crime that affords policymakers the opportunity to structure a defined response. This grants them the ability to articulate goals and demonstrate the effects of adopted initiatives.
