Below is a set of fictional data for senior college students. They reported the number of nights they spent partying during one recent week (0-7).
1, 0, 1, 2, 5, 3, 2, 3, 1, 3, 1, 7, 2, 3, 2, 2, 2, 0, 4, 6
a) Calculate the mean, median, and mode of the scores.
b) Are the median and mean similar to or different from each other? What does this tell you
about the distribution of scores?
c) What central tendency measure (mean, median, mode) do you feel is most representative
of this data – that is, which would you report as the most accurate description of the set of scores?
2. A researcher wants to compare the numbers of books in the homes of students from blue-collar families with the number of books in the homes of students from white-collar families. Explain (in a few sentences) your thoughts on why it might be useful for the researcher to compare medians instead of means.
