solve the problem.  Do I solve for y or do I solve for x or does it matter please help I am not getting this! Thank you very much and I appreciate any help.

I suggest you check out my eHow article on how to solve a system of two equations and two unknowns by using the substitution method:

You already know what y is from the second equation.  Plug this into y in the first equation and solve for x:
x+(3-2x)=6
x+3-2x=6
-x+3=6
-x=3
x= -3

Now plug this x value into either equation and solve for y.  I'll use the second equation, so:
y=3-2(-3)
y=3-(-6)
y=9

So, x= -3 and y=9.
