After delivering a newborn, you have clamped and cut the umbilical cord. The mother states she is having contractions again, and the protruding part of the umbilical cord becomes longer. You should:
A) firmly massage the lower abdomen in a downward motion.
B) place an additional clamp on the umbilical cord and cut it again.
C) gently pull the cord to deliver the placenta.
D) encourage the mother to bear down like she did when she delivered the baby.
