The mRNA transcript and proteins made from two different genes from an individual are isolated and observed.  If the following results are seen and compared to other individuals, give a one sentence reason for each result seen.

a. For gene 1, the mRNA produced is a normal length when compared to other individuals, but the protein produced in shorter and non-functional.

b. For gene 2, the mRNA initially produced is a normal length when compared to that mRNA from other individuals.  But, when the proteins are observed, there are two different lengths of proteins made from the same transcript.  This is also true in other individuals.

a. Translation either started later in the mRNA or stopped early. The easiest way to cause this is a mutation that creates a stop codon.

b. There could be two different genes encoded on the same mRNA, or a promoter site within the transcribed sequence, or a long protein could be cut into two pieces after its synthesis.
