RNA is single stranded simply because of the nature of the sugar. DNA is a double helix, and it is unwound by an enzyme called DNA helicase. This leaves two strands of the previously double-stranded DNA helix.

One of the strands of DNA is used as a template for the creation of RNA; the strands are not added. The bases of the DNA and RNA strands are complementary; if several of the bases in the DNA sequence were ATCGUGUATUC, the RNA strand would read UAGCACAUAG.

* Uracil (U) is the RNA version of Thyamine (T)
