In a Hardy-Weinberg population with two alleles, A and a, that are in equilibrium, the frequency of allele a is 0.5. What is the percentage of the population that is heterozygous for this allele?

A = p

p + q = 1

q = 0.5 (a)
p = 0.5 (A)

heterozygous = 2pq = 2 x 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.5 (Aa)
