I know about the ban, but how is it against French secularism? I've checked up eveyrwhere, and secularism allows religious expression as long as it does not harm others. I don't think headscarves harm others, so how exactly does this work?

well secularism means that the institution tries to stay away from any religion or its religious practices, and a hijab is definitely muslim so that would come into conflict with the school.

also, as much as religion means to you, it is just a blind faith. my family is muslim(i'm agnostic) as well, but don't base too much of their lifestyle around it. don't let it totally run. be yourself, be flexible with others, and don't let religion be an issue holding you back.

It works like this the French have always been far to the left in their politics which means in theory religion its self is the problem.

well, big count has it right. In addition, because it is such a hot subject, remember that the press is often either biased or misinformed (yep!).  a few of very public cases were actually reported in very misleading ways, and the all story was not told.  in one case, the girl was expelled, not because she wanted to wear a hijab but because she refused to participate in some curriculum activities, something the press did not really mention!!!
