Criminologists use four major sources of data to measure crime: Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), self-reported surveys, and observing.

Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) is a program that collects data on each reported crime incident. It is useful for identifying crime trends and profiling characteristics of typical offenders/offenses. However, it has several limitations such as underreporting due to misinterpretation of events, inability to record personal criminal activity, and inadequate questions format.

National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is a comprehensive, nationwide survey of victimization in the United States conducted annually by the US Census Bureau for the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). It addresses the nonreporting issue by collecting data from victims who do not report their experiences to the police. However, it has several limitations such as overreporting due to misinterpretation of events, underreporting due to the embarrassment of reporting crime, and sampling errors.

Self-reported surveys ask people to describe their own recent and lifetime participation in criminal activity. They are useful for measuring crimes that are not reported to the police. However, they have several limitations such as social desirability bias, memory recall bias, and exaggeration or underestimation of criminal activity.

Observing
is a method that involves observing criminal behavior in real-time. It is useful for measuring crimes that are not reported to the police and for understanding the context in which crimes occur. However, it has several limitations such as ethical concerns, observer bias, and limited generalizability.

Each source of data has its own strengths and weaknesses. Criminologists use multiple sources of data to triangulate their findings and minimize the limitations of each source.
