A battery has an internal resistance of 3 ohms and an emf of 6 V. It is connected to a 5 ohm resistor. What is the power in the external resistor?

How are you suppose to work this out?

You can ignore the internal resistance if the battery has a large capacity relative to the load (perhaps a headlight bulb powered by an old 6 volt car battery).  If the battery has a small capacity (perhaps a four AAA batteries in series) and the load is relatively large (headlight bulb?) the drain on the battery may lower the output voltage (droop) which would lower the power consumed by the load.  P = EI (Power = Voltage x Current).
