A island is populated with 20,000 people, every 1000 years the island is decimated by a volcano. what would be the effect of having only a few families who had lived in the same caves for millennia survive?

There wouldn't be much genetic variance because these families would have had to mate for a millennia and therefore not having a big change in the genetic makeup or chance for many mutations.

Due to the bottleneck effect, gene drift could occur within the few families. Possibly causing the smaller population to have different characteristics from the 20, 000 people on the island.
