The ancient Greeks came up with the graphing method of solving them.
Algebraic methods were developed by Arab mathematicians in the middle ages, and by European mathematicians later on.

The reason for solving them is the represent the "intersection" of several things occurring at once, and the solution for them is the area where their graphs intersect (sometimes a point, sometimes an area).  Doing so shows relationships between different things occurring at the same time.

Peace.
