There are three types of cells in the blood

1.Red Blood Cells (RBC), also known as Erythrocytes: their function is to transport respiratory gases: oxygen and carbon dioxide. Inside the red blood cells you will find mostly hemoglobin, a molecule that binds oxygen which is how oxygen is carried in the red blood cell. Red blood cells are not considered "true cells" because as they mature they lose all their intracellular organelles and when mature contain mostly hemoglobin.

2. White Blood Cells (WBC), also known as Leukocytes:function in the body's defense against disease. WBCs are the only "true cells" in the blood as they contain all intracellular organelles. WBC are actually a group of 5 cells:
Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Lymphocytes and Monocytes.

3.Platelets: Plateles function in the clotting process. Platets are also not "true cells" either, they are actually fragments of megakaryocytes.
