My parents saw a documentary on national geographic about the moon. They must've misunderstood but they now believe that the waves of the sea effect the rotation of the earth. Is this possible? Even if the waves were a lot larger will it still be possible?

Unless there is a new scientific theory abound, I have always learned that the moon influences the tides and waves and such.  But the rotation of the earth is due to the internal mechanisms, which are not clearly understood.  The core of the earth has its own cycles which at least help to keep the earth rotating, as well as our magnetic field in place.  But the earth probably has always rotated, since it was formed.  Constant bombardment by large meteors and comets probably placed it in rotation at some point, and the core of the earth, which itself has internal rotation, most likely keeps it static.
