I know hippos whisk their feces around with their tail. But what environmental pressure during evolution could have influenced this behaviour?

Hippos spin their tails when they defecate to mark their territory. So I guess the environmental pressure would be to make sure no other hippos would come along and mate with the females (which I guess is the hippo equivalent of cuckoldry) and also to prevent fights which could kill them. Hope that helps Slight Smile
