A patient is following an elimination diet to help determine food allergies. After one week, the patient’s symptoms resolve. Which of the following should be planned for this patient?
1. Reintroduce the eliminated foods one at a time to determine the food allergy.
2. Resume regular pre-elimination diet.
3. Ingest an antihistamine before eating a food that causes a food allergy.
4. Consume a diet of foods identified as causing allergies for the full week following the elimination diet.

Correct!

If symptoms improve after an elimination diet, foods are reintroduced to the diet one at a time until symptoms recur, indicating allergy to that food. The patient should not resume the pre-elimination diet. The patient should not ingest an antihistamine prior to eating a food that is identified as causing an allergy. The patient should not consume a diet of foods known to cause an allergic response.
