The Kirkwood gaps in the distribution of objects in the asteroid belt are caused by

(a)   the gravitational influence of Jupiter on objects whose orbital periods are simple fractions (e.g. 1/3) of Jupiter's orbital period.
(b)   the gravitational influence of Jupiter on objects whose distances from the Sun are simple fractions (e.g. 1/3) of Jupiter's orbital distance.
(c)   the sweeping out of objects by the major planets such as Jupiter and Saturn as they orbit through the asteroid belt.
