What conclusion can we draw from the observation that elliptical galaxies appear to contain little or no dust or gas?

(a)   There will be little if any star formation taking place in these galaxies.
(b)   These galaxies are very young and have not yet developed dust and gas clouds from the mass loss of their stars.
(c)   The dust and gas is difficult to detect because its radiation is overshadowed by the intensity of radiation from the hot, blue stars in these galaxies.
