I had to take a test where almost every answer I wrote was left as an improper fraction. All of those answers were marked incorrect, even though the test never specified to leave the answer as a mixed number. When I asked why, my test giver told me that it's because "I don't know how to use mixed numbers" when I actually do. Should my answers be marked wrong for using improper fractions, and is it better to use improper fractions or mixed numbers?

Improper fractions are always better. Your teacher is stupid, you can quote me on that

It usually depends on teacher preference, but it should have been specified. Its sometimes best to put both, like the improper fraction in parentheses or something. Best not to argue, I know that for sure

it shouldnt be marked wrong unless you have been given specific instrcutions on how to do it in class...  you could speak to the head of math department about it, or the next authority.

but it is better to write your answers in mixed fraction.. improper fraction looks incomplete

Improper fractions are better to use. Changing it to a mixed number is just another step, which can lead to an error that could cause your answer to be wrong. They're also easier to work with when you are working with all fractions.

I always left improper fractions in college math tests. This was never frowned upon. As long as your fractions are reduced to the lowest terms I have never met a math instructor who cared. Unless instructions specifically stated to convert to mixed numbers they have no right to penalize you for it. I would appeal the test giver's ruling to a higher authority.

When he told you you don't know how to do it you should have said "nonsense" and offered to demonstrate your skill.
