2 -- The nasogastric tube is inserted through the unobstructed nare to avoid mucosal trauma; however, a large gastric tube may interfere with nasal breathing, and necessitate close monitoring. A tube would not be able to be placed through an obstructed nare. The nasal edema may persist for a long period of time, so waiting would not be appropriate. A tube placed through the patient’s mouth would be an orogastric tube.
