The medical record should be reviewed to determine hypersensitivity to salmon calcitonin and if the patient is lactating. Wash hands to prevent the transmission of bacteria to the patient. Explain the procedure to the patient to alleviate any anxiety. Warming the nasal spray promotes comfort and reduces vasoconstriction. Administer the medication. Observe the patient for any adverse reaction such as nausea and vomiting, mild transient flushing of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet, and urinary frequency. Teach the proper method of administration to reduce complications. Remind the patient to alternate nostrils daily when administering calcitonin nasal spray.
