A patient is hospitalized with Guillain-Barré syndrome and the nursing diagnosis Spontaneous Ventilation, Impaired has been identified. 1,2,3,4 -- Respiratory failure and infection are serious complications for the patient hospitalized with Guillain-Barré syndrome. Remember ABCs patent airway is the first concern, followed by close assessment of the arterial blood gases. Nutrition would come next, and although it is important to educate the patient during all cares of his or her hospitalization, this is not a priority intervention compared to the others.
