1) If the electron in a hydrogen atom is initially at principal quantum level n1=6 and a photon with frequency v = 5.84e13 s^-1 is absorbed, to what new quantum level, n2, is the electron promoted?

2) The electron in a hydrogen atom undergoes a transition to n1 = 3 from n2 = 9 with the emission of a photon. What is the wavelength (lambda) of the photon?

1) energy of the photon
E=hv= 6.626*10^-34*5.84 10^13=3.87*10^-20J
in eV divide by 1.6*10^-19=0.241eV
E2-E1= 13.6 (1/n1^2-1/n^2)   and n1=6
0.241/13.6=1.778*10^-2= (1/36-1/n^2)=0.02778
1/n^2 = 0.02778-0.01778= 0.01
n^2 =100 n=10
so the electron jumps from n=6 to n=10

2)E from a transition from n1=3 to n2 =9

E = 13.6*(1/9-1/81) = 13.6*8/81=1.343 eV= 1.343*1.6*10^-19=2.15*10^-19J
wvelength  =
hc/E= 6.626*10^-34*310^8/2.15*10^-19 = 9.24*10^-7m
wavelength =924 nm
